Types of Hauntings/Entities

Disclaimer: There are no facts with the paranormal because it cannot be studied and observed via the scientific method, so it is perfectly okay to have different beliefs than what we state here. We use the most common beliefs and theories, as well as what we personally believe based on our research and experiences.

This information may change over time as we are presented with new information or experiences.

Intelligent Hauntings

Intelligent Hauntings are a haunting that is carried out by free-thinking entities, such as spirits and demons/non-human entities. This type of haunting is the most exciting to investigate because these entities will interact with you the most!

This type of haunting is carried out by psychic imprints, or the Stone Tape Theory; the speculation that ghosts and hauntings are analogous to tape recordings, and that mental impressions during emotional or traumatic events can be projected in the form of energy, “recorded” onto rocks and other items and “replayed” under certain conditions. A good example would be that of the scene of a murder; every year on the anniversary of the murder, the screams of the victim can be heard. An imprint like this is perfectly harmless, except for the fact that it may frighten you!

the difference between a ghost and a spirit

Ghosts are believed to be the remaining energy and memory of a human that has passed away. They generally are not too aware, and often cannot be interacted with. A Spirit, on the other hand, is believed to be the remaining personality and consciousness (the “soul”) of a human that has passed away; essentially they are us, but without the meat suit! Many mediums believe that we all transition to spirit form after we pass away, and with that way of thinking, a ghost would be similar to a psychic imprint of a human, or their residual energy, whereas the spirit is us/our soul. The only real way to determine whether you are dealing with a ghost or spirit is to interact with the entity or observe them enough to determine whether it is intelligent and free thinking (a spirit) or if it seems unaware or like they run on a loop (a ghost). Is it possible that we leave both behind? Can part of us can form a ghost, while our spirit moves on? Who knows…

What are spirits made of?

A leading theory for this would be the Spirit Particle Theory; the idea that small “spirit particles” reside in the tubules of our brain and function at a subatomic quantum level, and are what make up our “soul”. It is believed that these particles remain after we pass away, which is supported by the fact that energy cannot be created or destroyed. A big flaw in this theory was that no one believed our brains could function at a subatomic quantum level, but a random study of medicine in rats happened to show that their brains can function on this level, meanings ours likely can as well. This is just a theory, and it is doubtful that we will know the truth or be able to observe these particles any time soon.

Poltergeist is a German word that translates to “noisy ghost”, but it should not be confused with a human ghost. A poltergeist is the manifestation of our own emotions, which can lash out at us and harm us/the environment around us. A good way to tell if a poltergeist is responsible for a haunting is to try and observe when it occurs. One way to do this is by setting up cameras in the area where the activity tends to occur; if it happens when no one is around, then it is not a poltergeist. But if the activity only occurs around a specific person, then it is likely a poltergeist attached to them that formed from their emotions. Poltergeist activity typically manifests as objects moving, unexplainable sounds (like knocking), random smells with no known origin, and electrical interferences. The best way to get rid of a poltergeist is by seeking professional help through therapy. It is also important to note that some people view poltergeists as a separate entity and believe that they are low-level demons. Either way, seeking professional help from someone local to you is the best solution for ridding yourself of a poltergeist. (It is also possible that a poltergeist could be imprinted in an area as well, via the stone tape theory, but who knows…)

Ivy has had a personal experience with what was likely a poltergeist, and it did seem to resolve itself over time. The possible poltergeist she manifested would open and close her bedroom door, slam the drawers to her dresser, and would create long, hard scratching sounds on the wall. This occurred during a terrible relationship and when her depression was at its worst. So please, if this is happening to you, don’t wait it out like she did! It is okay to reach out for help.

Hannah also has experience with a poltergeist. While living with her parents, there was something that would knock on the walls, cause her to feel sick, have the feeling of something watching her, and near the end of her moving out, became louder and angrier as it would bang on the walls and move chairs to get her attention. To this day when she visits her parents, the energy can still be felt in the front room where this poltergeist seems to reside.

demons/non-human entities

One of most common types of non-human entities that you will hear about while chasing the paranormal are demons. The name demon comes from the Greek word daemon which means a spirit of divine power. Christianity has quite literally demonized demons and it is important to keep in mind that these are simply non-human entities that are not inherently evil or malevolent. That being said, demonic entities that cause hauntings do tend to fall under the malevolent category and should be dealt with by professionals. Symptoms of a malevolent demonic haunting are quite different than that of a human spirit because demons have a different range of abilities, such as possessing hidden knowledge that they gain through telepathy. Other common signs of a malevolent demonic presence include strong fowl smells with no known origin, and protective or religious items breaking or going missing.

Nature Spirits are another common non-human entity. Many cultures and belief systems have their own variations of nature spirits, such as Fae or Fey (a more proper term for them is Sidhe, pronounced “shee”) from European folklore, but many people believe that these entities do not inhabit this continent, the US. Our indigenous people had similar entities, so it is possible they are causing the phenomena behind these strange encounters people will have outdoors with what seem to be non-human entities. Nature Spirits is a comfortable umbrella term to use because these entities seem to have a common goal of protecting nature and existing outside, and behave in ways not common with human spirits. So although we personally don’t know who or what it is, we do know that something is out there.

Shadow figures and shadow people

Shadow figures are the shadowy manifestation of a human that has passed away. Shadow people, on the other hand, are believed to be a non-human entity. Despite the name, they appear as more than just a shadow; they are usually rather tall and “masculine” in build, and are solid black, whereas shadow figures from human spirits looks softer and more like an actual shadow. No one is entirely sure what shadow people are; some people believe that they are demonic, and some people think they are aliens or are some type of entity from another dimension. They tend to watch and observe us, and are rarely known to actually interact with us, although some people do claim to have received messages from them telepathically. Shadow people are also often seen wearing some form of top hat and a long coat, while others are seen with glowing eyes and horns.

Ivy has more personal experience with shadow people than she has had with any other type of entity, and saw them for years in her parents house before she moved out. She first spotted them during episodes of sleep paralysis and passed them off as being hallucinations. But one night, another family member slept in her room with her and they saw the figures for themselves at the same time that Ivy did. Ivy also began to see them during the daylight and outside of sleep paralysis. Her experience was both terrifying and fascinating, and is part of the reason that she became the investigator that she is today!

Hannah has also had experiences with shadow people during her childhood. Around the ages of 4 and 5, her family moved to an apartment complex in West Virginia for a few months. During this time, she would see a shadow figure every night in the corner of her bedroom, smiling and staring at her. With that, every night, she would run out of her room to only turn around and see the figure still staring at her from the doorway. To this day, she remembers it vividly as it inspired her to become a paranormal investigator!

It is no wonder that Ivy and Hannah are such good friends now, and created this blog together!

Haunted Items

Most haunted items that you will hear about are usually old dolls. There is a handful of good theories as to why this seems so common:

  1. When you give a child an item like a doll, they typically love it and take it everywhere with them. They name it, play with is constantly, give it a personality, and sleep with it every night. But when the child grows up, they eventually stop playing with the doll and abandon it. It is theorized that the doll can then “crave” the love, energy, and attention that it once had, giving it a strange and powerful “vibe” that people will feel when in its presence.
  2. Dolls can be subject to gathering residual energies from the person or people around them, especially with how well loved they tend to be. This would essentially be a residual haunting.
  3. Some people believe that they make an appealing vessel for spirits and entities to attach themselves to because of the dolls human appearance. This could also be due to the fact that dolls are sometimes passed down through generations, and will usually have people present around them for the entity to interact with or “feed” off of.
  4. The “uncanny valley” is when something looks human, but something about it will be slightly off, making us feel uncomfortable. For example, many older dolls will have odd proportions that make it seem slightly less human than it should, like a very large head and tiny arms, or odd facial features. This is a big reason as to why dolls can make so many people uncomfortable, even when nothing paranormal is going on.

Ivy considers herself to be a connoisseur of haunted dolls and spends her time collecting them! She enjoys investigating them at home in her free time to figure out which ones have possible attachments, and is glad to give even the spookiest of dolls a place to call home! Some of them are purchased by her at antique stores or off of eBay, and others are given to her as gifts or because the owner didn’t like the “vibe” and paranormal occurrences that surround the doll.
